DISAPPEARANCE OF ALPHABET CITY

Alphabet City is found in the lower east side of Manhattan and ends just at the water where the FDR Drive hits. It has been known for being home to many POC and struggling artists. Specifically, it was known for being home to many Puerto Ricans and other hispanics as Ave. C was changed to Loisaida, a pronunciation of ‘Lower East Side’ with a hispanic accent. At one time it was home to many of the first graffiti writers, b-boys, rappers, and DJs. The area also had high levels of illegal drug activity and violent crime.

Due to this, gentrification had been put on hold in this part of Manhattan. One may think because it is in a prime part of the island, that it would have been gentrified long ago, however many were still scared to come down to this part of manhattan even in the 80’s which was not long ago.

Markers of gentrification could be first found during the 90’s and early 2000’s however the real changes can be seen right now. With change coming at rapid speed, many wonder what will happen to the cultural identity of Alphabet City.
